Google Photos is getting a major upgrade with new AI-powered editing features and expanded AI search capabilities, now available in more than 100 countries. The update marks a significant step in Google’s push to make photo management and creativity more intuitive and accessible across devices.
These updates reflect Google’s broader strategy to integrate Gemini-powered AI across its ecosystem, making everyday tasks more efficient and creative
Natural language editing comes to iOS
One of the standout features is natural language editing, which allows users to modify photos simply by typing or speaking commands. Initially launched for Pixel 10 devices, this feature is now rolling out to iOS users in the U.S., enabling edits like “remove sunglasses,” “make Engel smile,” or “open Riley’s eyes” using the new “Help me edit” option.
The system uses Google’s advanced image model, Nano Banana, to apply realistic changes while preserving the natural look of the photo.
AI templates and personalized edits
Google is also introducing a new section called “Create with AI”, which includes ready-made templates for popular edits. These templates allow users to transform their photos into stylized versions — such as Renaissance portraits or comic book scenes — with just a few taps. The editor now recognizes individuals from Google Photos’ face groups, making it easier to apply personalized edits across multiple subjects in a single image.
AI search expands globally
In addition to editing tools, Google is expanding its AI-powered search to over 100 countries, allowing users to ask complex questions about their photo library. For example, users can search for “photos of me at the beach with blue skies” or “pictures of my dog playing fetch,” and the AI will surface relevant results using contextual understanding. This global rollout enhances Google Photos’ utility as a smart archive, especially for users with large libraries spanning years of memories.
