In a significant move that could redefine Maharashtra’s innovation landscape, global tech giant Google is gearing up to support artificial intelligence (AI) startups across the state.

The development comes after a crucial meeting between Google’s top leadership and Maharashtra’s Minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Mangal Prabhat Lodha.

Google’s Venture Capital and Startup Partnership Head Dr Apurva Chamaria met Lodha at Mantralaya on Wednesday to discuss how Google can help promising startups in Maharashtra reach international markets. With the tech world placing growing emphasis on AI, this collaboration is expected to open doors for local entrepreneurs who are looking to scale globally.

“Maharashtra is ready for the next leap in innovation. Our youth are talented and full of entrepreneurial energy. With Google’s support, we’re going to ensure they get a world-class platform to showcase their skills," said Minister Lodha after the meeting. Also present at the discussion were Skill Development Commissioner Lahuraj Mali and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ OSD Kaustubh Dhavse.

Google already operates AI training centers in nine countries, and plans are underway to set up a similar facility in India — the first of its kind — with Maharashtra as the potential host. This centre will focus on nurturing AI-based startups, with selection based on a competitive process. The startups chosen will get access to global mentors, funding opportunities, and a gateway to international markets.

“This will not just be a training hub, but a launchpad for Maharashtra’s brightest minds," Lodha said. He added that initial talks have begun and a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is likely soon.

In a parallel development, Google has also expressed interest in introducing advanced tech-based courses in Maharashtra’s ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes), helping students stay future-ready and aligned with industry needs.

The proposed partnership is being seen as a win-win: Google will deepen its footprint in India’s fast-growing tech ecosystem, while Maharashtra’s young entrepreneurs and students will gain direct access to cutting-edge knowledge and global networks.
