To streamline the identification of hydrogen-powered vehicles, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a new category of registration number plates, differentiated by distinct colour codes based on vehicle type.

According to a draft notification issued on Friday, hydrogen-fuel-operated vehicles will soon sport colour-coded number plates combining green and blue backgrounds, with figure colours varying based on the vehicle’s purpose.

For commercial hydrogen vehicles, the number plates will have a green top half and a blue bottom half, with yellow-coloured figures. Private hydrogen vehicles will feature the same green-blue colour combination, but with white figures.

Vehicles operating as cabs for rent will have a black top half and blue bottom half, with yellow figures on the plate.

This initiative aims to help authorities and the public easily identify hydrogen-fuel-powered vehicles, while also promoting green mobility in India.
