Panaji: State govt decided to set up a municipal solid waste (MSW)-based bio-methanation plant for compressed biogas (CBG) production at Headland Sada, Mormugao, with a capacity of 25 tonnes per day (TPD) at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore. The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) said that decentralised biomethanation plants will help to promote renewable energy generation (CBG) and ensure regular utilisation of by-products such as compost, reduce dependency on landfill disposal through daily treatment of segregated wet waste, and demonstrate that waste management can be made self-sustaining while supporting the sustainable development goals and the circular economy model. In line with national objectives of promoting renewable energy, reducing dependence on landfills, and generating value-added products from waste, GWMC has proposed setting up decentralised MSW-based biomethanation plants for CBG production. The plants will be located at the Headland Sada waste management site of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) model at no cost to the govt.
A senior official said that this will help the state govt set up plants without spending any amount on setting up plants, and if the model is successful, then such models will be implemented in other parts of the state. At present, Goa has two plants at Saligao and Cacora, and both generate electricity.“This plant will generate CBG,” the senior govt official said.Despite the controversy surrounding the setting up of a solid waste management plant at Bainguinim, sixcompanies submitted their bids for establishing a 100 TPD (tonne per day) plant at Bainguinim. The six companies are Hyderabad Integrated MSW Ltd, Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd, 3R Management Ltd, Srinivas Waste Management Services Pvt Ltd, Organic Recycling Systems Pvt Ltd, and HNB Engineers Pvt Ltd. A senior official said that scrutiny of documents is in process, and eligible bidders will be called to participate.
