New Sweden head coach Graham Potter announced his first squad for the nation with Liverpool struggler Alexander Isak being included in the roster despite his struggles with a groin injury. Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, who missed Arsenal’s latest fixture due to a muscle injury, has been omitted from the list.
Potter was appointed last month on an initial contract to oversee Sweden’s final World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia in the upcoming two weeks.
He will also manage the national team during the World Cup playoffs in March, where Sweden is expected to participate after winning its recent Nations League group.
Nevertheless, Potter will commence his tenure without Gyökeres, who was substituted at halftime due to injury during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday and missed the 3-0 triumph over Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed concern about Gyökeres’ injury before the Slavia game and suggested uncertainty regarding its severity.
Isak, who became Liverpool’s record signing during the summer transfer window, has not played since being substituted at halftime in the 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Oct. 22.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot mentioned on Monday that Isak was racing to be fit for Sunday’s match against Manchester City in the league, and Potter stated that the striker’s fitness would be evaluated after the weekend.
Potter commented that while Isak is not ready to play two full matches for Sweden, he is available for selection.
Sweden is currently at the bottom of its four-team World Cup qualifying group, with one point from four games, following a disappointing campaign that resulted in the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, the team’s first foreign-born coach.
