 A 20-year, billion-dollar tribute to ancient Egypt

After more than two decades of anticipation, Egypt is finally ready to unveil one of the most ambitious cultural projects in modern history, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Located near the Pyramids of Giza, the $1 billion complex will officially open its doors to visitors in November 2025, as per Wikipedia and Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) official page, marking a new chapter in the preservation and presentation of ancient Egyptian heritage.

It also says that in preparation for the Grand Opening Ceremony, the GEM will remain temporarily closed until 4 November 2025.

A museum two decades in the making

A museum dedicated to a single civilisation, the idea for the Grand Egyptian Museum dates back to 1992, when the Egyptian Government envisioned a world-class facility to safeguard and showcase the country’s vast archaeological treasures. The foundation stone was laid in 2002, and a year later, Dublin-based Heneghan Peng Architects won an international design competition to bring the project to life.

However, construction was plagued by political upheavals, regional instability, funding shortfalls, and the COVID-19 pandemic, delaying the opening several times.

Monumental design inspired by ancient geometry The building’s triangular façade of translucent alabaster reflects the desert sunlight, while its north and south walls align precisely with the Great Pyramids of Khufu and Menkaure, creating a seamless visual dialogue between past and present.

Inside, a grand staircase ascends toward panoramic windows that frame the Pyramids, a breathtaking transition from the ancient world outside to the treasures within. The design incorporates landscaped gardens, cultural venues, cafes, and educational spaces, transforming the museum into an immersive cultural complex rather than a traditional gallery.Read more: UN announces ‘World’s Best Tourism Villages 2025’; 52 destinations recognised, none from India this yearWorld’s largest museum dedicated to one civilisation According to Ahmed Ghoneim, Director of the GEM, the museum is the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilization, ancient Egypt.
