The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday lauded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government for major reductions in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates across essential goods and services.

Describing it as a milestone in tax reforms, BJP MP and party spokesperson Sambit Patra said the move would benefit all sections. The cost of essential goods and services linked to ‘Roti, Kapda, aur Makaan (food, clothing, and shelter)‘ would go down.

Congress is ‘new AAP’

At the press conference, Mr. Patra criticised the Congress party, stating that it failed to implement GST during its long innings in power and only indulged in giving slogans like ‘Garibi Hatao (remove poverty)‘.

“The Congress party should hold a press conference on these GST reforms and explain if farmers will benefit or not. Will families benefit or not?” he said, while accusing the party of turning into a new ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ that attacked constitutional institutions without any basis.

He said the goal of the GST reforms, being pro-middle class, pro-farmer, and pro-poor, was to improve ease of living and doing business in the country. It was made possible only due to Mr. Modi’s able leadership, he asserted.

Noting that a 7.8% growth in manufacturing had been recorded this quarter, Mr. Patra said no one had earlier thought that consumer price inflation would be 1.5%, the lowest in eight years. “No one had imagined that we would become the fastest growing major economy, but today we are...,” he said, adding that the GST reforms were a major change and a “bundle of happiness”.
