A man from Gujarat has approached the state High Court seeking a divorce, claiming that his wife’s obsession with stray dogs had a severe impact on their married life. The plea, which includes allegations of cruelty, centres on the wife’s habit of bringing stray dogs into their home and forcing him to share his bed with them.

The Gujarat High Court is scheduled to hear the matter on December 1. Last year, in March 2024, the court had issued notice to the wife following the husband’s appeal against a family court decision that had dismissed his divorce petition.

According to the husband, his marriage began to face problems when the wife brought a stray dog into their apartment in Ahmedabad despite objections from the residential association. He alleged that the dog posed a danger to him and other residents, and financial constraints made it difficult to maintain the pet, Bar and Bench reported.

The husband further claimed that she later introduced more dogs into their home, which led to unhygienic conditions and complaints from neighbours. He said the dogs often attacked him, leaving him with painful bites, and that one dog frequently insisted on sleeping in the marital bed, biting him if he tried to sleep beside his wife.

The husband also cited other incidents of alleged cruelty, including an April Fool’s prank organised by his wife through a radio station, which publicly accused him of an extra-marital affair. He claimed the stunt embarrassed him before friends, colleagues, and the public. He further alleged that the stress from these events contributed to his diabetes and other health issues.

The couple, who met in 2001 and married in 2006, have had a long history of legal disputes. The husband had initially filed for divorce in Bengaluru in 2012, but the court returned the case in 2016 citing jurisdictional issues. A family court in Ahmedabad rejected his petition in February 2024, prompting the current appeal before the High Court.

The wife has denied the allegations, stating that she never brought any stray dogs into the home and that her husband was involved with a trust that looked after the animals. She admitted arranging the April Fool’s prank but said it caused no harm, and denied responsibility for his health issues.

During proceedings on November 11, the High Court bench asked the parties to explore the possibility of a settlement. The husband’s counsel has offered to pay Rs 15 lakh, while the wife had demanded Rs 2 crore.
