Guv calls for research on tribal traditions

Bhubaneswar: Governor and chancellor of universities, Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati, called upon universities to evolve into globally competitive, socially responsible and technologically advanced institutions while remaining rooted to Indian values.Inaugurating the two-day vice-chancellors’ conference on Sunday, he said universities are centres of knowledge, innovation and leadership and have a crucial responsibility in nation-building.Drawing attention to Odisha’s rich tribal heritage, the governor urged universities to undertake meaningful research on indigenous knowledge systems, tribal traditions and cultural preservation. He informed the gathering that publications documenting Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), prepared by the tribal cell of Lok Bhavan, would be made available to universities to support academic study and research initiatives.Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the state govt has earmarked 13.7% of its 2026-27 budget for developing education. “The govt has decided to set up new universities in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda and Bhadrak, and financial provisions has been made in the budget. Besides, new engineering colleges will be established in Paradip and Balangir and two new Krushi Mahavidyalayas in Mayurbhanj and Balangir,” the CM said.

The discussions revolved around several issues including implementation of National Education Policy-2020, which was rolled out in the state in Aug 2024; bringing students under NCC, Bharat scouts and guides; and the apprenticeship embedded degree programme at UG level.
