Tanvi Sharma, a silver medallist at the World Junior Championships, finished as the runner-up in women’s singles after an 18-21, 18-21 defeat to Tung Ciou-Tong of Chinese Taipei in the finals of the Guwahati Masters on Sunday.

The 16-year-old from Punjab had advanced to the semifinals at the Syed Modi International Super 300 last week. She also reached the Odisha Masters final last year and finished as the runner-up at this year’s US Open Super 300 and the World Junior Championships.

How Tanvi Sharma Lost To Tung Ciou-Tong?

Tanvi and Tung engaged in lively rallies, with Tanvi taking an 11-8 lead at the mid-game interval by effectively mixing her strokes. However, the Taiwanese shuttler clawed back, levelling the score at 16-16 and then moving ahead 18-16.

Tanvi hit two wayward smashes, allowing Tung to secure the opening game.

After the change of ends, the score was tied at 5-5 and 6-6 before Tanvi again led 11-8 at the interval, helped by unforced errors from her opponent. However, Tanvi soon faltered, committing a series of mistakes, including four shots into the net, as Tung levelled the game at 13-13.

Despite some impressive cross-court smashes and drops from Tanvi, her inconsistency and further unforced errors allowed Tung to move ahead 17-16. Two more errors handed Tung three match points. Tanvi saved one with a sharp cross-court return before another shot went wide, sealing her runner-up finish.

Pruthvi-Sai Also Lose

The Indian men’s doubles pair of Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K also finished second after losing 13-21, 18-21 to Malaysia’s sixth seed Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai in a lopsided final.

Sanskar Saraswat clinched his maiden Super 100 title with a three-game victory over compatriot Mithun Manjunath in the men’s singles final. The 19-year-old from Jodhpur displayed grit and firepower, unleashing a barrage of smashes to outplay former national champion Manjunath 21-11, 17-21, 21-13 in a 50-minute all-Indian final.
