A first-year student’s courage saved her from being kidnapped by three unknown miscreants on her way to college in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior. Shockingly, the kidnapping bid was attempted just a few steps away from the Women’s Police Station in Padav. The disturbing incident has once again highlighted concerns about women’s safety.
The kidnapping bid, which took place in broad daylight, was caught on CCTV cameras. According to police sources, the incident occurred around 11 am when a first-year student was on her way to college. An autorickshaw that had been parked nearby suddenly drove toward her. One of the men inside grabbed her hand, while another jumped out and tried to lift her by the leg. The auto driver allegedly urged his accomplices to push her inside the vehicle, NDTV reported.
Displaying remarkable bravery, the minor resisted fiercely, broke free, and ran toward the women’s police station for help. Before she could get assistance, however, the attackers abandoned the autorickshaw and fled on foot.
Shaken by the ordeal, the girl went home before returning later to lodge a formal complaint with police. The autorickshaw has since been seized, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
The location of the crime — between a women’s polytechnic college and the women’s police station — has drawn widespread criticism from residents, who are questioning how such an incident could occur in one of the busiest and supposedly safest areas of the city.
“We have filed a case against the unidentified men and are close to identifying them through CCTV footage. Arrests will follow soon," inspector Shailendra Bhargava of Padav police station told NDTV.
The brazen attempt has left citizens outraged and fearful, reigniting debate over the state of public safety for women in Gwalior.
