The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has launched a drive to stop the illegal sale and misuse of steroids and cardiac stimulants in gyms.

The crackdown follows the recent seizure of 66 vials of ‘Termiva’ and ‘Termin’ injections, both containing Mephentermine Sulphate (30 mg/ml), which were being stocked and sold illegally to gym-goers for bodybuilding and endurance enhancement.

As part of the ongoing operation, the DCA officials, in coordination with local police, conducted surprise inspections at 20 gyms across Hyderabad on Friday. The inspected facilities were located in Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally, and Suraram.

Officials noted a rise in the misuse of Mephentermine Sulphate Injection, a cardiac stimulant meant for the treatment of low blood pressure during spinal anaesthesia. Due to its endurance-boosting effects, the drug is reportedly being abused by some bodybuilders to enhance physical performance.

Gym owners and trainers have been warned against indulging in or facilitating such illegal practices and urged to ensure strict compliance with the law, said a release.

The DCA cautioned that stocking or selling prescription-only medicines such as anabolic steroids and Mephentermine Sulphate Injection without authorisation constitutes a violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Offenders face imprisonment of up to five years.
