It’s been a long time coming, but the picture around Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer situation at Ferrari is finally starting to take shape.
On track, things are looking up for the Brit this season.
Hamilton has enjoyed a far stronger start to his second season in red, already securing a podium and sitting fourth in the drivers’ standings — a marked turnaround from a bruising 2025 campaign, where he was comprehensively outscored by teammate Charles Leclerc by 86 points.
Off track, however, Ferrari have been quietly working to rebuild the seven-time champion’s inner circle.
The split from Hamilton’s former race engineer Riccardo Adami at the end of last season left a noticeable gap, one the Scuderia have been keen to fill with the right long-term fit.
For now, Carlo Santi has stepped in. He’s been on the pit wall, including at Bahrain, and while initially viewed as a stopgap, Ferrari have made it clear he’s firmly in place as Hamilton’s current race engineer — at least for the moment.
But the name that’s been quietly doing the rounds in the paddock is Cedric Michel-Grosjean.
Who Is He?
The French engineer, who previously worked with McLaren as Lead Trackside Performance Engineer, left the team at the end of last year.
Not long after, speculation ramped up when he described himself as being on a “career break" on LinkedIn — which fueled talk of a potential move to Maranello.
And now, according to Motorsport.com, the timing of his foreseeable arrival at Ferrari is beginning to fall into place.
With a five-week break in the calendar, following the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and Bahrain Grand Prix, Cedric is expected to officially step into the role from the next race weekend, beginning May 1.
At McLaren, Cedric played a key role in extracting performance from Oscar Piastri, overseeing car optimisation and driver development across race weekends and testing.
His fingerprints were all over a hugely successful 2025 season, where Piastri notched up seven Grand Prix wins and McLaren secured back-to-back Constructors’ Championships.
Well, that sort of success is what Ferrari and Hamilton will be aiming to replicate, if the move percolates.
