Hartalika Teej symbolises devotion, marital harmony just like Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and feminine strength, and it is celebrated on the third day of the bright fortnight of the Bhadrapada month, as per the Hindu lunar calendar-- this generally falls between August to September in the Gregorian calendar. This year Hartalika Teej is being celebrated on August 26, 2025.

History and story behind Hartalika Teej

Hartalika Teej is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. The legend is that Goddess Parvati wished to marry Lord Shiva, but her father, King Himavan, wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu instead.

In order to fulfilled her lifelong wish, Parvati ji, with the help of her friend, fled to a forest. There she performed intense penance to please Shiv ji. Moved by her devotion, Shiva accepted her as his wife. The word “Hartalika” is made of two Hindi words-- harit which means abduction and aalika which means female friend. Thus, it symbolises the friend who helped Parvati escape to fulfill her wish.

Significance of Hartalika Teej

The significance of Hartalika Teej lies in its devotion to marital bliss and faith.

Married women observe this day by fasting and praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women fast in hopes of being blessed with a loving life partner, just like Lord Shiva. The festival reflects the values of love, loyalty, and spiritual strength, while also celebrating the bond between friends who support one another through challenges.

How is Hartalika Teej celebrated

Celebrations of Hartalika Teej are marked by both devotion and festivity.

On this auspicious day, women wake up early, bathe, and wear new or traditional attire-- which is often a bright saree with green bangles, mehendi (henna), and ornaments. They observe a strict nirjala vrat (fast without food and water) on this day-- married women for the well-being of their partner, and unmarried women for finding a life partner like Shiv ji.

This is also a reflection of their discipline and devotion.

Then, women keeping the fast gather to perform puja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, using clay idols decorated with flowers and offerings. Devotional songs and prayers are chanted, narrating the divine union of Shiva and Parvati. Cultural customs such as applying mehendi, singing traditional Teej songs, and exchanging gifts between married women (known as Sindhara) also form an important part of the celebration. To help you wish your friends and family on this auspicious festival of Hartalika Teej, here we list some wishes, messages and quotes to share with them:1.
