Navratri, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates and honours the victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura, whom she defeated and killed. Mahishashura was gifted immortality by Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. However, the blessing had one condition- no one but a woman would be able to kill the demon.

Sine Mahishasura believed that no woman would be powerful enough to defeat, so he accepted it. Over the next few years, the demon and his group of evil men started attacking people on Earth, even defeating gods in the process. Ultimately, to put an end to the terror, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh decided to create the mighty goddess Durga who would defeat the evil demon. The goddess, bestowed with multiple weapons, fought the demon for 10 days but was facing difficulties due to his shifting form.

When he finally took his ultimate form as a buffalo, the goddess was able to defeat and kill him with her weapons. To honour this victory, people across the country bring in idols of Maa Durga and worship them with chants, food, dance, meditation and more.
