Harry Maguire couldn’t have scripted it better — a match-winning header at Anfield in what might be his final Liverpool clash wearing Manchester United red.
Brought back into the starting XI by Ruben Amorim for his experience and aerial presence, Maguire delivered exactly that.
He defended fiercely, led from the back, and then popped up in the 84th minute to nod home the decisive goal, sealing United’s 2-1 win.
“It’s amazing," Maguire said after being named Man of the Match.
“I’ve had some great moments at this club, and this is right up there. To get the winner at Anfield — it’s special for me, for my family. It’s been tough coming here."
‘Maybe My Last Time Here’
With his contract entering its final year, Maguire admitted the emotion behind finally breaking United’s long winless run at Liverpool.
“I’ve been here seven years now, and it’s been tough not getting that win," he said. “It’s been on my mind. I’m in my last year now, so this could be my last time playing at Anfield for United. I needed to tick that one off — it’s been playing on my mind."
Maguire stated, “We know how important the game is for our fans. Last year we performed really well and I had chance to maybe win it, so it was a big, important win for myself, for each player, for the staff, for Ruben. But more importantly, a big win for our fans because it’s been tough for them."
A Moment for the Fans
The defender’s celebration — a knee slide in front of the travelling fans — summed up the emotion. “I didn’t even know where I was when it went in," he laughed. “But I just had to celebrate in front of our fans. They’ve been amazing with me through everything."
Maguire finished by urging United to keep the momentum going: “We’ve got to build on this. Performances bring results — that’s the key. Take the positives, take the confidence, and make sure we get the win next week."
