Celebrated primarily in North India, Hartalika Teej commemorates the divine union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The festival is named by the legend associated with it. 'Haratalika' is a combination of the word 'Harat' and 'Aalika' which mean abduction and female friend respectively.Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan, desired to marry Lord Shiva. Thus, she performed intense atonement for several years, surpassing various hardships to prove her devotion to the lord. Her father. however, wished her to marry Lord Vishnu and thus to prevent the disturbance of her atonement, her friends took her away to a forest.Impressed by her unwavering devotion, it is said that Lord Shiva was moved and appeared before her, accepting her as his consort.
The event is believed to be the origin of the festival. And women across the world, celebrate Goddess Parvati's devotion.

How do people celebrate Hartalika Teej?
On Hartalika teej, people make idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from clay or sand. The rituals include observing a Nirjala vrat (fast without food and water), worshipping the god and goddess, applying henna and joining together to dance, sing and pray. The women recount the love story of the venerated pair and ask for a happy marriage and health of their husband.
