A 27-year-old engineer has lost over ₹11 lakh to online fraudsters in Chalageri village of Haveri district.
Pooja Sali from Chalageri was conned by swindlers who claimed to be telecom officials.
She got a call from a person identifying himself as Rahul Sharma, a junior telecom officer.
He said that Pooja’s ID was linked to a number involved in illegal activities in Mumbai and threatened her with strict legal action.
Fearing a police complaint against her, she listened to the caller and obeyed his commands. She transferred over ₹11 lakh to various accounts and UPI IDs that he shared.
It was only later that she realised she was being cheated. She filed a complaint with the Cybercrime, Economic Offences, and Narcotics (CEN) Police Station in Haveri.
Police Inspector S.R. Ganachari has begun investigation.
