Mumbai: Infrastructure major  Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) has been awarded a prestigious ₹127 crore contract in Bhutan by the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL), the company said in a press release. This involves constructing diversion tunnels, cofferdams and hydromechanical gates, with a scheduled completion date of nine months. The contract was awarded following WHPL;s technical and financial evaluation process, reflecting HCC’s proven expertise in executing complex hydroelectric projects in challenging geographies.

HCC has been fairly active in the Kingdom, with its presence spanning three decades, where it has developed massive power assets like the Chukha, Tala, and Punatsangchhu hydroelectric projects, contributing power for both Bhutan and India’s regional grid.

The company has been a dominant player in the hydropower sector, constructing almost 26% of India’s total installed hydropower capacity and Bhutan’s energy infrastructure. It services as a prime engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor capable of executing large scale, complex projects, especially in challenging mountainous terrain.

The company has seen its net profit dropping 35% to ₹58.9 crore in Q4 FY26 from the same period last year due to challenges with slimmer margins. Its EBITDA has also fallen 60.2% to ₹170.8 crore during the same period as an increase in labour and material costs have seen its EBITDA decline at twice the rate of its revenue. Despite this, the company has managed to slash its debt by 38% year on year to ₹1,995 crore.

HCC’s shares were trading at ₹24.30 on May 5 at 10.15 am.
