Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy laid the foundation stone for the construction of an autorickshaw stand at Sanjaya Circle in Mandya on Sunday.

It will be built with the area development funds of Mr. Kumaraswamy and the Rajya Sabha member H.D. Deve Gowda.

Mr. Kumaraswamy performed the bhoomi puja rituals with autorickshaw drivers.

Speaking to reporters, the Union Minister said the demand for an autorickshaw stand was a long-standing one. Though the autorickshaw system in Mandya was very useful to the commuting public, the drivers suffered due to the absence of an autorickshaw stand, he said.

About establishing well-equipped hospitals and schools at every panchayat level in the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Kumaraswamy said a blueprint had been prepared for the construction of schools at a cost of ₹8 crore.

“We have also planned to construct bus shelters at 100 locations,” he said.

The Union Minister said he required the support of the State government to bring in a major industry in Mandya district for job creation. “If the government extend its support and provide land for the purpose, I will take action as soon as possible,” he said.

He emphasised the need for generating more employment in the district in view of the demand for jobs.
