KOLKATA: BJP MLA Biraj Biswas on Monday became the youngest member of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s Council of Ministers at the age of 32.Biswas, the MLA from Karandighi in Uttar Dinajpur, took oath as Minister of State at Lok Bhavan along with 34 senior leaders. The BJP’s strong showing in north Bengal has played a key role in shaping the new Council of Ministers, with several legislators from the region being sworn in.In the recent Assembly election, he defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Gautam Pal, who was seeking re-election from Karandighi, by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.“I am proud to have given birth to such a son. Today, his dream has come true, and I am very happy,” his mother, Bina Biswas, told PTI.

Recalling his early interest in public life, she said her son had often spoken about joining politics while he was still a student.“He would always say that he would continue his studies seriously but remain active in politics and one day become a minister. It was his dream,” she said.Biswas’s elevation marks another milestone in a political career that began with student activism and developed through years of organisational work within the BJP and its affiliated bodies.

Associated with the RSS, Biswas began his political journey with the ABVP, gradually rising through its ranks. He also served as the ABVP’s state secretary before being appointed all-India secretary.A law graduate, he first drew political attention during protests over the killing of two students in alleged firing and bombing incidents at Daribhit High School in Islampur in September 2018.Party leaders view his induction as a reflection of the party’s effort to blend youthful leadership with administrative experience. Biswas has consequently gained popularity among citizens and within political circles.“He always believed he would reach this position one day. Today, that dream has come true,” she said.(With PTI inputs)
