US President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayoral candidate and Democratic Assemblyman from Queens, following Mamdani’s recent controversial comments regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Talking to the press, Trump said, “He is not a socialist, he is a communist and said some really bad things about Jewish people and a lot of other people. I think he’s going through a little honeymoon right now, but he won’t make it. He better behave, otherwise he is going to have some big problems."
Trump’s remarks come days after Mamdani expressed strong support for a ceasefire in Gaza and pledged, if elected, to arrest Netanyahu should he ever step foot in New York — comments that sparked a political firestorm. Mamdani, a prominent voice on the American left and a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, has been gaining national attention for his bold stance on foreign policy and police reform.

Trump’s warning has escalated tensions in what is already shaping up to be a polarising NYC mayoral race. While Mamdani’s supporters have praised his outspoken advocacy for Palestinian rights and progressive causes, critics including Trump, have accused him of crossing a line and undermining US-Israel relations.
The President’s comments also reflect a broader political strategy to rally conservative voters around foreign policy and national security narratives, particularly in the context of rising campus and grassroots activism against Israel’s Gaza offensive. As the rhetoric intensifies, Mamdani has yet to directly respond to Trump’s remarks. However, political observers suggest the exchange could further galvanise both his supporters and his opposition in the run-up to the 2025 mayoral election.
