DeMarcus Lawrence spent 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He became one of the most respected players in that locker room. But this year, he lifted the Super Bowl trophy with the Seattle Seahawks, in his very first season away from Dallas.
On Friday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke honestly about that moment. And instead of bitterness, there was pride.Jones made it clear he was happy for Lawrence. Even though the defensive end left in free agency last offseason, the bond built over more than a decade did not disappear. Lawrence fought through injuries in his final year with Dallas. Then he bet on himself and signed with Seattle. Now, after winning it all, he is even thinking about retirement as he prepares to turn 34 in April.
Jerry Jones praises DeMarcus Lawrence after Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl win
Jerry Jones did not hold back when speaking about his former star. “I don’t know if anybody wanted him to come out there with a win any more than I did,” Jones said. “He deserves that. He was an outstanding individual, outstanding player, and deserved everything he had coming. The year before with us was a very tough year; he fought injury, and he bet on himself. He basically stepped up there.”Jones continued, “And I personally would like to think that he was the difference maker.
… We spent a lot of years together, and can’t get to be with people like that and not root for them when they got a chance to do something special. And I’m really I’m proud of him. I’m proud to have been a part of his career, and I’m proud he won that, super honest.”Lawrence made an impact in Seattle right away. During the 2025 regular season, he recorded 53 tackles, including 24 solo stops, along with 6.0 sacks. He also forced three fumbles, recovered three, and defended one pass.
In the playoffs, he added seven tackles, 2.0 sacks and two passes defended. His presence helped the Seahawks finish the job. Now, there is another layer to the story. Reports on Friday said Lawrence is considering retirement after winning the Super Bowl. He still has two years left on his contract with Seattle. But after reaching the top, he may decide it is the right time to step away. For Dallas fans, it may feel strange seeing him succeed elsewhere. Still, Jerry Jones made it clear, respect lasts longer than uniforms.
