Russian Grandmaster Daniil Dubov’s post-match comments didn’t go down well with netizens, with certain fans calling him arrogant after he beat R Praggnanandhaa at the ongoing FIDE World Cup in Goa.

In the previous edition held two years ago, the young Indian had made it all the way to the finals before losing to eventual winner Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

Praggnanandhaa for once, didn’t get the complexities in his favour as Dubov is a known expert in the faster time control.

“Preparing for two classical games against Praggnanandhaa 🇮🇳 took me just 10 minutes — all on my phone! I didn’t even use my laptop," said Daniil Dubov after winning against Pragg in the Round 4 tiebreaks of the #FIDEWorldCup in #Goa pic.twitter.com/FUusDtANLO— International Chess Federation (@FIDE_chess) November 13, 2025

“Preparing for two classical games against Pragg took me 10 minutes with the phone altogether. I didn’t even use my laptop. I did it for the first time during the match in between the games today," Dubov said while speaking to FIDE after registering the big win.

“He is Pragg, he’s the one who probably spends like day and night looking at stuff. He still fails to pose a single problem with white. So maybe it’s not about me. It’s a short distance, it’s kind of hard to also much as tough at this stage," Dubov added.

“So it’s kind of hard to tell. Maybe I played a little bit better, maybe not anyway. It’s very much about luck and also someone beautiful wanted me to win this exact match badly for some reason so I am happy to deliver," Dubov said.

“The fearless approach he showed today taking a draw in the first rapid game and then winning decisively with the Black pieces was truly remarkable. His confidence is undeniable, but the comments do seem to border on arrogance," a user tweeted on Thursday evening.

After a draw in the first game wherein Dubov played it safe as white, the onus was on Praggnanandhaa to show his preparation with white pieces.

“His confidence makes him better, but this is such an arrogant take. Hope Pragg beats him in the candidates if he qualifies," another user tweeted.

However, as things turned out Praggnanandhaa fell short of time when he needed it and lost a pawn and a rook for a minor piece to end his campaign in the knockout event.
