A 27-year-old man, Ryan Louis Mosqueda, was fatally shot by federal agents Monday morning after opening fire at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas.

According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, the incident occurred around 5:50 a.m. Mosqueda was armed with an assault rifle and wearing a utility vest when he fired dozens of rounds at the facility. Federal agents responded by returning fire. Mosqueda died in exchange of fire.

The shooting took place across the street from McAllen International Airport, which was temporarily shut down as a safety precaution.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that two officers, including one shot in the knee, and a Border Patrol employee were injured in the incident and they are in the hospital.

After the incident, authorities recovered a second rifle, additional ammunition, and several backpacks that Mosqueda had brought with him. One officer sustained an injury, although it is unclear whether it was caused by a bullet or shrapnel.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

Mosqueda allegedly pulled up to the facility in a white two-door sedan. As per a report by AP, Rodriguez said the car used by the attacker had something written on it, possibly in Latin, but “what it means, or whether or not it is an underlying reason for him being here, I do not know."

Mosqueda was linked to an address in Michigan, but was reported missing from a Weslaco, Texas, address around 4 a.m. Monday. Weslaco is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the Border Patrol facility.

“An hour and a few minutes later, he was at this particular location opening fire on the federal building and our federal agents," Rodriguez was cited by AP as saying.
