Heavy rain lashed many parts of Vellore and its neighbouring areas on Sunday.

Low-lying areas, such as Sampath Nagar and Kansalpet in Old Town within the Vellore Corporation limits, were inundated due to the continuous rain. Frequent power cuts were also reported in many areas in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

Tiruvannamalai district received the highest rainfall at 147 mm, followed by Ranipet (96.10 mm) and Vellore (72.60 mm). Among major towns in the district, Vandavasi received the highest rainfall at 21 mm, followed by Chetpet (18 mm) and Cheyyar (12 mm) as of 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

Crop damage was also reported in farming areas such as Sholinghur, Thimir, and Kaveripakkam in Ranipet district, where large tracts of land were under paddy cultivation. Waterbodies in these districts are also filling up faster. Nearly half of the 697 tanks in Tiruvannamalai district have reached their full capacity. Among the 369 tanks in Ranipet, 153 have been filled to the brim, while 42 are at 50% of their full capacity.

Temple authorities have temporarily suspended rope car service at the Sri Lakshminarasimhar temple in Sholinghur town near Ranipet due to the rain.
