Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kerala over the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said, thus issuing a red alert for eight districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The weather department also issued an orange alert for six districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.

According to the IMD, strong westerly winds are likely to persist at lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region for the next two to three days, resulting in widespread rainfall.

“Strong westerlies are likely to continue at lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region during the next 2-3 days. Under the influence of these, widespread rainfall activity with scattered Heavy rainfall to Very Heavy rainfall with isolated Extremely Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Kerala on 29th & 30th May 2025," the weather department had said on Thursday.

“Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Kerala on 31st May, 1st and 2nd June 2025," it added.

The precautionary measure applies to professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, madrassas, and special coaching classes.

The district declared a similar holiday on the previous day due to intense rainfall.

Amid the heavy rainfall alert, the Kerala government has issued urgent precautionary orders to ensure public safety.

“Under the Disaster Management Act 2005, Sections 25(2)(a), 26(2), 34(b), and 34(c), the following orders are effective immediately – Night-time travel in the high-range areas of Idukki district is completely prohibited from 7 PM to 6 AM, except in emergency situations," a government order read.

“All tourism-related activities in Idukki district are fully banned until further notice," it added.
