At least eight people have died in Maharashtra as heavy rains lashed several parts of the state over the weekend. Most of the deaths were caused by lightning strikes, officials said.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Ratnagiri and Raigad districts along the coast. An orange alert has been issued for Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, and the ghat areas of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed for rescue work.

Ratnagiri recorded the highest rainfall at 88.1 mm, followed by Raigad with 65.3 mm. Sindhudurg, Thane, and Yavatmal also received significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, ending at 11 am on Sunday.

So far, eight people have died and ten others have been injured in rain-related incidents in different districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nashik, Sambhajinagar, Nandurbar, and Amravati.

The Jagbudi River in Ratnagiri district is flowing above the warning level. Villages near its banks — Khed, Alsure, Chinchghar, and Prabhuwadi — may face flooding if water levels continue to rise.

Heavy Rain Disrupts Daily Life In Karnataka

In Karnataka, continuous heavy rain caused waterlogging and landslides in several areas on Sunday, disrupting daily life.

Coastal areas were hit the hardest. In Dakshina Kannada district, rainfall ranged between 110 and 210 mm in just 24 hours. Mangaluru alone received 170 mm, while Panambur recorded 210 mm. Udupi district saw 50 mm of rainfall.

The IMD issued an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu districts, warning of thunderstorms and lightning.

In Mangaluru, several low-lying areas such as Pumpwell, Bikarnakatte, Kaikamba, and Kankanady experienced flooding due to poor drainage. Rainwater entered homes and shops, causing damage and slowing down traffic.

A major traffic junction in Pumpwell remained flooded for hours, and buses from Bengaluru had to take a detour. Along the Jayashree Gate–Bikarnakatte road, poor drainage led to waterlogging, and residents complained that authorities have not fixed the problem despite repeated requests.

A landslide blocked part of National Highway-169 near Kettikallu in Belthangady taluk. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and efforts are ongoing to clear the road.

In Udupi, several areas including Brahmavar, Gundibail, and Kalsanka were flooded. Nearby villages in Kundapur taluk also saw heavy waterlogging, affecting roads and homes.

Meanwhile, in Yadgir district, the Krishna River is in spate due to heavy rainfall in Maharashtra. Authorities released 52,000 cusecs of water from the Basavasagar Dam, opening 14 gates to manage the inflow.

The dam currently holds 28.20 TMC feet of water out of its total capacity of 33.33 TMC feet. The release created a dramatic scene as water gushed out from the gates.

Farmers in several parts of Karnataka have reported crop damage due to flooding. Local officials have urged residents to stay away from waterlogged and landslide-prone areas and to contact emergency services in case of danger.
