Ganesh Chavithi celebrations in Telangana were welcomed with widespread rains across the State and Hyderabad city as roads were flooded, and at some places washed away, triggering traffic disruptions on the highways.

The rains extended across the combined Nalgonda district, covering Nalgonda, Suryapet, Bhuvanagiri, Yadagirigutta, Aleru, Rajapet, Motakondur, Turkapalli, and Bommalaramaram areas. Heavy showers in Nandanam of Bhuvanagiri mandal caused flooding at the Singireddygudem railway underpass bridge.

Medak and Nizamabad were severely affected by the rains pounding the districts. Water overflowing at Ramayampet on the Nizamabad highway disrupted traffic. Roads were washed away as streams and rivulets flowed with floodwater, cutting off several areas.

Incessant downpour in Vikarabad district led to the Kotipally project overflowing, submerging nearby roads and disrupting traffic in surrounding villages.

Similar scenes were reported from Kamareddy district, where Domakonda, Bibipet, Machareddy, Bikkanoor, Palvancha, Pitlam, Nizamsagar, Bhikkanur and Lingampet witnessed heavy rains. A culvert collapse at Lakshmapur in Yellareddy mandal damaged the road and brought vehicular movement to a standstill.

Siddipet district too was pounded by showers, particularly in Gajwel, Mirudoddi, Thoguta, Dubbaka and Daultabad. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the combined Medak district, forecasting heavy floods in the Manjeera River.

In Hyderabad, steady rainfall was reported from Lingampalli, Miyapur, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Kondapur, Rayadurgam, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet, Nampally, Dilsukhnagar, LB Nagar, Hayatnagar, Uppal, Medchal, Shamirpet and adjoining areas. Commuters faced delays as several arterial roads witnessed water stagnation.

Huge rains in several places

Peddashankarampet in Medak district recorded the highest rainfall of over 20 cm followed by Tekmal at 19.1 cm and Ramayampet at 17.9 cm. This was followed by 18 cm in Nizamsagar (Kamareddy), 16.48 cm in Nizampet (Sangareddy), 14.93 cm in Bhuvanagiri (Yadadri), and 9 cm in Bhutpur (Mahabubnagar).

CM Revanth cautions Collectors

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy asked the Collectors to be on high alert and asked the state administration to be ready to meet with any eventuality as rains inundated low-lying areas and disrupted road connectivity across the State.

As there was danger to culverts and roads due to heavy flows into streams and rivulets officials were asked to stop vehicular movement in flooded areas. The Irrigation department was also directed to keep a watch on the overflowing tanks and other water bodies that were filled to the brim in several districts.

He asked the officials to evacuate residents living in dilapidated houses. Electricity department officials were instructed to take precautionary measures to ensure safe power supply, particularly to the Ganesh pandals.

Mr. Reddy also directed the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Production Agency (HYDRAA), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Services, and Police departments to coordinate and reduce inconvenience to people.

Heavy rains forecast

The IMD attributed the rains to a low-pressure system and forecast widespread rainfall across the state for the next two days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over North, East and Central Telangana districts. An orange alert has been issued for North Telangana today, while yellow alerts remain in place for East and Central Telangana.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area is also expected to witness occasional heavy spells amid cloudy weather conditions. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious in low-lying areas and avoid unnecessary travel.
