'Heer Ranjha': ‘Dhurandhar’ star Sara Arjun to play Heer in Imtiaz Ali’s film - Reports

Following the cult success of 'Laila Majnu', Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali are reportedly developing a modern retelling of the legendary Punjabi folk tale, 'Heer Ranjha.' The project, announced on Valentine’s Day 2026 is currently in its casting phase.

Recent reports suggest hat a fresh face could be cast for the titular role of Heer.

Sara Arjun as Heer

Following her performance in the 2025 blockbuster 'Dhurandhar', Sara Arjun has emerged as a top choice to play the titular role of Heer. A report from Mid-Day suggests the production team is seeking a "fresh yet impactful" face who can balance traditional vulnerability with modern relevance. The report stated that Sara's ability to command a major production was proven by her work with Ranveer Singh in 'Dhurandhar.

' Because of that success, she is now the frontrunner to portray the iconic role of Heer for today's audience.

Rohit Saraf as Ranjha

For the male lead, buzz points toward Rohit Saraf whose name has been circulating widely. Fans are already imagining the chemistry between Rohit and Sara. The casting process is still underway and the makers have not addressed the speculation yet. An announcement is expected once the script reading sessions conclude.

Sara Arjun's fame grows with 'Dhurandhar 2'

Sara Arjun’s increasing visibility is also linked to her presence in 'Dhurandhar 2', where she stars alongside Ranveer Singh. The film is slated for release on March 19. In a chat with NDTV, she said, "The audiences have high expectations already after part one, but you can just expect a lot more of everything that you loved already in part one, be it action, be it the story, everything. There's a lot more of all that coming in part two.

" The action franchise has a strong ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Rakesh Bedi.On the other hand, Sara Arjun is famous among South audiences, having gained much popularity with her roles in movies like 'Ann Mariya Kalippilaanu' and 'Ponniyin Selvan'.
