Panic spread at the Thalassery General Hospital on Tuesday after an IRPC (Initiative for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care) help desk volunteer was allegedly stabbed by a youth near the hospital pharmacy.

The injured was identified as K.P. Valsaraj, 50. He sustained a stab wound on the left side of his abdomen.

The police said the assailant, a youth reportedly addicted to drugs, was taken into custody and later arrested. Valsaraj is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The Kannur district unit of the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) condemned the incident and expressed concern over the recurring assault incidents at government hospitals.

The association reiterated its long-standing demand for the deployment of Special Industrial Security Force at major hospitals and armed police personnel at all institutions with emergency departments. The KGMOA also urged the government to set up permanent police aid posts at hospitals handling casualty cases.
