Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has criticised those who once tried to defame singer Zubeen Garg while he was alive but are now glorifying him after his death. His remarks came a day after police in Baksa district used batons and tear gas to disperse a mob that attacked a convoy carrying five people arrested in connection with the singer’s death.

Taking to the social media platform ‘X’, Sarma wrote, “When Zubeen was alive, the entire ecosystem tried to defame and pull him down. Today, after his death, the same people worship him as a god." The chief minister went on to describe such individuals as “fake fans", claiming their intention is not to honour the artist but to use his name for political purposes.

“These are not real admirers—they are fake fans whose only motive is to use his name to attack and oppose BJP. True love and respect are shown when a person is alive, not when it becomes convenient after death," he added.

Zubeen Garg Death Case: Singapore Police To Meet Assam Police

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday also gave an update on the ongoing probe in the singer’s death case and said that the Singapore Police will meet the Assam Police team, led by ADGP Munna Gupta, who also heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing singer Zubeen Garg’s death, on October 21.

Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma wrote, “Another step forward towards justice for our beloved Zubeen. The Singapore Police authorities will meet the Assam Police team led by Sri Munna Gupta, ADGP and Head of SIT, on 21st October. Our team will travel to Singapore on 20th October accordingly. Our collective resolve remains — Justice for Zubeen will prevail."

Assam CM Alleges Political Groups Trying To Spark Unrest In State

On Wednesday, Sarma had also alleged that certain political groups were attempting to create unrest in the state following Garg’s death. He said that these groups were spreading a false narrative to serve their own vested political interests, using the emotions of genuine fans to incite tension.

“Some political parties are attempting to instigate the common people, who are the real fans of the singer, to create a situation which is indeed condemnable," he stated. The chief minister warned that such actions could harm Assam in the long run, drawing a parallel with the unrest during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement.

“This is not in the interest of the people and it will harm the state for a long time, just like the movement against the CAA did," Sarma said.

Appealing for calm, the chief minister urged citizens to trust the judiciary and not fall for misleading political propaganda. He added that Zubeen Garg’s death “cannot be a political advantage for anybody", and condemned attempts to keep the issue alive until the next assembly elections.

Sarma also alleged that some people, who had previously criticised Garg, were now deleting old posts and claiming to be his biggest supporters. He warned that this group would “not allow the situation to settle down till there is violence or a Nepal-like situation in the state."

The Assam government has already formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19, where he reportedly drowned in the sea.
