No, Honey Singh hasn't joined the BJP, nor has he announced any political plans yet. However, the Punjabi singer-rapper appeared with a BJP leader to issue a joint appeal against the drug menace in Punjab. Honey Singh's de-addiction story, could work for the BJP ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.

"Dope Shope" once made Yo Yo Honey Singh impossible to ignore. Now, more than a decade later, the man behind the 2011 hit is asking Punjab to say no to dope altogether. While some found Honey Singh's request of no dope absurd, others argued that his struggle with addiction and overcoming it, makes him a more persuasive messenger than most politicians.

Singer-rapper Hridesh Singh, popular as Yo Yo Honey Singh, on Tuesday met BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and issued a joint appeal against drug abuse in Punjab. The meeting with Chugh, just less than a year before the 2027 Assembly polls in Punjab, has sparked a buzz that the rapper-singer could join or endorse the BJP.

There is no indication so far that Honey Singh is joining the BJP. But the optics of the meeting and the messaging it tried to deliver, were hard to miss. BJP leader Tarun Chugh praised Honey Singh's recovery from addiction and urged him to use "his voice, his singing and his words" to motivate Punjab's youth to stay away from drugs.

Honey Singh responded that "drugs are destroying families and youth" and pledged support for efforts to free Punjab from the menace.

For the BJP preparing for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election, the endorsement of the anti-drug messaging by Honey Singh, might be as important as the message.

WHY IS HONEY SINGH DIFFERENT FROM A TYPICAL CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENT?

Punjab has seen actors, singers and celebrities enter politics before. But Honey Singh, should he ever choose to enter public life — whether through the BJP or any other party — would bring something different to the table.

Unlike many contemporary influencers whose appeal is limited to a specific age group, Honey Singh's audience cuts across generations. Those who danced to Brown Rang, Angreji Beat, Dope Shope and Desi Kalakaar in college are now voters in their thirties and forties. They are still grooving and even to the latest songs. At the same time, Honey Singh's comeback has introduced him to a younger audience. That gives him a rare cultural reach.

Tarun Chugh, in the video posted alongside Honey Singh, described the singer-rapper as "a son of Punjab who has made a name for himself all over the world". He also called the singer's life story "very inspiring", pointing to his rise, fall and eventual return to the top of the music industry.

For a BJP seeking to broaden its appeal in Punjab for decades, Honey Singh's mass popularity and comeback story makes him a difficult proposition to overlook.

HOW DOES THE ANTI-DRUG MESSAGE FIT BJP's POLITICS?

The second reason lies in the message shared by Honey Singh itself.

For months, BJP leaders have repeatedly attacked the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government over the drug problem in Punjab. The issue has remained politically potent because nearly every major party in the state has at one point accused its rivals of failing to curb narcotics trafficking and addiction. But drugs have continued to flow through Punjab irrespective of which party has been in power.

Honey Singh's journey lends credibility to the conversation around the drug menace in Punjab.

Since his professional comeback after he came out of addiction a couple of years ago, Honey Singh has spoken about his struggles with addiction and mental health. Chugh explicitly referred to that experience, saying, "If Honey Singh can come out of that swamp, then every child of Punjab can come out of it."

The BJP leader urged Punjab's youth to look at Honey Singh as proof that recovery from drug addiction is possible. "If Honey Singh can make a comeback, then you too can become Honey Singh," he said.

Honey Singh has become a messenger whose personal story is central to the BJP's anti-drug campaign messaging.

WHY HONEY's PIND, DOABA, MATTERS IN BJP's PUNJAB EQUATION

There is also a political geography angle to Honey Singh's messaging with BJP leader Tarun Chugh.

Honey Singh's pind (native village) lies in Hoshiarpur district in Punjab's Doaba region. The geographical belt has also become increasingly important in the BJP's calculations ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.

The party has intensified its outreach in Doaba as part of a strategy aimed at consolidating Dalit, OBC and non-Jat voters. The BJP's Punjab outreach is being spearheaded by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who has made frequent visits to the state and focused on building support among non-Jat communities.

The region also has a large NRI population and has historically played a big role in shaping Punjab's social and political trends. So, the global Punjabi Honey Singh, who has his roots in the region, naturally fits into the BJP's anti-drug effort, if not in the 2027 polls.

At this stage, there's more culture and social good than politics to the Honey Singh-BJP leader meeting.

Honey Singh did not announce any political plans during the meeting. Nor did the BJP suggest that he was preparing to enter electoral politics. The interaction centred on Punjab's drug crisis.

But, a man whose comeback story is known across India and the world is being asked by the BJP to convince Punjab's youth that they can stage their own comeback too, in itself a big message by the saffron party.
