For decades, a sub-two-hour marathon was seen as out of reach. Now, Sabastian Sawe’s 1:59:30 in an official race may change the marathon as we know it.

Sabastian Sawe, a 31-year-old Kenyan, ran 26.2 miles in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds at the London Marathon on April 26, 2026 — the first man in history to break two hours in an official, record-eligible race.

He shattered Kelvin Kiptum’s previous world record of 2:00:35 by a staggering 65 seconds, and even bettered Eliud Kipchoge’s assisted 1:59:40 from the 2019 INEOS Challenge.

Remarkably, second-place finisher Yomif Kejelcha also broke the 2 hour barrier, crazy how it takes >100 years of timed marathons then it happens twice in 15 seconds.

But, how was it possible for a human to achieve what Sawe did?

Sawe admitted that he maintained an extremely strict diet, which helped fuel his body accordingly for the occasion.

Sawe may have just opened the door for others to study and prepare to break the 2-hour mark themselves.
