Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case: As the mystery over Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder deepened, the owner of a dhaba (roadside eatery), from where Raja’s wife Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested, revealed crucial details about the drastic moment when she approached him at 1 am on Monday.

Sonam is the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja, after his decomposing body was found in a gorge after the newly-wed couple went on a honeymoon in Meghalaya. She was traced and arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur after she arrived at a dhaba at 1 am in the night.

According to Sahil Yadav, the owner of the Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur road, Sonam was walking on the roadside and asked him for help. “She said that she had to call home. I gave her my mobile phone and she dialled. I asked her to sit there (pointing to a chair nearby). I called the police, they came, and they took her away," Yadav told News18.

While speaking to news agency IANS, Yadav said Sonam told him that her own mobile phone was stolen. “She was crying so hard that she could barely speak. She asked for water, and I gave her the water. Since she couldn’t talk properly, I spoke to them as well. They requested that I contact the nearest police station to ensure her safety," he said.

Yadav said he had inquired about what had happened to her, and she told him about her husband’s death. “She and her husband had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, and Raja was killed while trying to protect her from a group of men who attempted to snatch her jewellery," he said, adding that she “did not remember how she got to Uttar Pradesh".

Shortly after she called her family, local police were informed of Sonam’s presence in the eatery and she reportedly surrendered at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur. Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash confirmed that Sonam was located at Kashi Dhaba and was initially sent to Sadar Hospital for medical examination.

‘I Was Kidnapped, Abandoned In UP’

While police say Sonam had surrendered, Raja Raghuvanshi’s family claims that she had not, and they had informed the police about her whereabouts. Police have also arrested her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and three others – Aakash Rajput, Anand and Vishal Singh Chauhan.

In her first statement following the arrest, Sonam claimed innocence and alleged she was abducted. According to sources with the police, Sonam claimed she was not an accused, but a victim in the case.

She also alleged that she, after abduction, was abandoned in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, from where she called her brother, Govind. Sonam’s father confirmed that she had called the family; however, he denied all charges against her, further demanding a CBI probe.

Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, both residents of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, had gone missing during their honeymoon in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was later recovered in a gorge in Meghalaya, while Sonam remained missing.
