A woman councillor belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was brutally hacked to death by her husband in Tamil Nadu’s Avadi district on Thursday, allegedly over suspicions of an extramarital relationship.

The victim, Gomathi, was reportedly seen standing and speaking with another man near Jayaram Nagar in the Thiruninravur locality when her husband, Stephen Raj, arrived at the scene after receiving a tip-off.

An argument broke out between the couple, which escalated. In a sudden act of violence, Stephen Raj allegedly took out a knife and repeatedly attacked Gomathi. She collapsed and died on the spot.

Following the incident, Stephen Raj went to the Thiruninravur police station and surrendered, admitting to the murder.

Police have taken him into custody and are investigating further.
