Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann returned to his official duties a day after being discharged from the hospital, immersing himself in the state’s monumental flood crisis. Upon his return, Mann offered an emotional statement that set the tone for his administration’s renewed focus. “I am not the Mukh Mantri of Punjab… I am the Dukh Mantri," he declared. The CM added a poignant Punjabi proverb, “Dukh sanjha karan naal dukh adha reh janda hai" (Sharing sorrow halves it), reinforcing his commitment to stand in solidarity with those affected by the devastating floods.
The Chief Minister’s return comes at a critical time for Punjab, which is grappling with one of the worst flood disasters in its history. The latest reports indicate a death toll above 45 and crop damage that has wiped out livelihoods on over 1.75 lakh hectares of agricultural land. Whole villages have been submerged, and thousands of families have been displaced, creating an unprecedented humanitarian and economic crisis.
Upon his arrival at his official residence, Mann immediately convened a series of high-level meetings with key officials to assess the state’s flood relief and rebuilding efforts. During these meetings, he reviewed the progress of rescue operations, the distribution of relief materials, and the evaluation of crop damage. He instructed officials to expedite the process of disbursing compensation to affected farmers and to ensure that rehabilitation efforts are carried out swiftly and transparently.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited the flood-hit states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to review the rain-afflicted damage and rehabilitation efforts after weeks of heavy downpour that have wreaked havoc across these states.
The PM conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas, held review meetings with the respective administrations, and announced immediate relief packages of Rs 1,600 crore and Rs 1,500 crore for Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, respectively.
