Mujhe kuch yaad nahi hai (I don’t remember anything)," said Sonam Raghuvanshi – confused, disoriented, and barefoot – as she sat before a magistrate in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur on Monday. Seventeen days after she went missing in Meghalaya during her honeymoon — the same trip where her husband Raja Raghuvanshi was found murdered — Sonam emerged thousands of kilometres away, and was immediately thrust into the heart of a chilling murder probe.

Hours later, the Ghazipur court granted Meghalaya Police a three-day transit remand, allowing them to formally take her into custody and fly her to Shillong, where she is now being treated not as a victim, but as a key conspirator in her husband’s killing.

Sonam, who had been missing for 17 days after her husband was found dead in a deep gorge in Meghalaya’s Sohra region, appeared disoriented in court. Wearing a loose black T-shirt and track pants, with unkempt hair and a fatigued expression, she remained mostly quiet throughout the three-hour hearing.

When questioned briefly outside the courtroom about how she ended up over 1,100 kilometres away in Ghazipur, she replied softly, “Mujhe kuch yaad nahi hai (I don’t remember anything)."

Her Appearance at Ghazipur Court

Her court appearance marked a dramatic shift in the investigation. Until Sunday night, Sonam was just a missing person in a high-profile case. But her sudden discovery at a roadside dhaba in Uttar Pradesh, and her subsequent statements and behaviour, transformed her into a key suspect.

Police sources confirmed that Sonam was presented before the Ghazipur magistrate amid tight security. The proceedings lasted nearly three hours, during which Meghalaya Police laid out the grounds for seeking transit custody. Her legal counsel did not oppose the plea, paving the way for her departure to Shillong by late evening.

“She was cooperative but visibly drained," said an official who accompanied her to court. “She didn’t resist the transfer and didn’t offer much beyond saying she doesn’t remember how she got to Ghazipur."

Found in a Dazed State at UP Dhaba

Sonam had resurfaced a day earlier at the Kashi Dhaba near Nandganj in Ghazipur. The dhaba owner, Sahil Yadav, recounted the unusual scene. “She came in crying barefoot, asking for a phone. She said she wanted to call her family. After a while, her brother called back and asked me to inform the police," said Sahil. “She looked like she hadn’t slept in days. She was lost."

Sonam was immediately taken to the One Stop Centre and kept under police surveillance. A female officer, during preliminary interaction, asked her how she travelled such a long distance. Sonam’s only reply was that she doesn’t remember anything.

Meghalaya Police’s Murder Theory

Hours after taking her into custody, Meghalaya Police briefed the media, citing findings from the Special Investigation Team (SIT). State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh confirmed that investigators suspect Sonam orchestrated the murder with the help of three contract killers.

“She remained in touch with the accused and reportedly sent her husband’s location multiple times," said a source familiar with the investigation. “One CCTV footage shows her pacing and speaking on the phone at the hotel, moments before Raja went missing."

Back in Indore, police arrested three men — Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, and Akash Rajput — accused of carrying out the murder. A fourth accused, Anand Kurmi, is expected to be flown to Shillong on Tuesday.

Conflicting Claims on Surrender

While Meghalaya Police claim that Sonam surrendered at the Nandganj police station, the sequence narrated by the dhaba owner nd her family suggests otherwise.

How she managed to travel from the Northeast to eastern Uttar Pradesh — without any phone, ID, or money — remains a puzzle for investigators.

CBI Probe Demanded

Meanwhile, Raja Raghuvanshi’s family in Indore is grappling with the loss and stunned by Sonam’s alleged involvement. His mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, has demanded a CBI probe, stating, “Raja had been married only recently. We never thought something like this could happen. She was part of our family."
