A 35-year-old Indian man has been convicted and jailed for six months in Singapore for molesting and harassing a cabin crew member on Singapore Airlines flight, as per a report by The Independent. The man was identified as Akash Tiwari.
He was also ordered to pay 1,270 Singaporean Dollars (US$ 982.25) to the complainant as compensation, according to a South China Morning Post report.
The incident reportedly happened in February of this year. Tiwari was traveling on a flight going to Singapore from Bangkok.
Tiwari allegedly stretched out his arms to brush them against the leg of the complainant when she approached the group to confirm their meal preferences before flight’s take-off, court documents, accessed by The Independent, show.
The convict and his four friends laughed every time the flight attendant walked past them during the journey, according to the court documents. When the complainant informed the chief stewardess about this incident, she was assigned to another aisle.
This did not end there, though. When, later, she went to where this group was sitting to collect trays, Tiwari used his elbow to brush against her back.
She reported the matter again.
The man was confronted by the flight attendant along with a senior colleague. Accused of it, Tiwari denied any wrongdoing.
The complainant had repeatedly told Tiwari to not touch her, Deputy Public Prosecutor Lynda told the court. He smirked at these accusations, which further distressed the flight attendant, the public prosecutor informed.
Tiwari did not even stop there. When the flight was about to land, he followed her into the galley, which is a narrow and confined space, and stood extremely close to her.
She warned him multiple times to stay away but he did not accede. Eventually, he cornered her and at this point the flight attendant shouted at the man.
When the man had brushed his elbow against the back of the complainant, who asked him not to touch her, his friend, identified as Jay Shankar, said he would like to have a beer and watch the ‘show’.
The incident was duly reported to the aircraft captain, and the airport authorities launched a police investigation into this after the arrival of the flight at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
On Monday, a Singapore court sentenced Tiwari to a six months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to one count of molestation and another count of harassment.
The Independent also mentioned another similar case of a 20-year-old Indian man molesting a flight attendant on another Singapore Airlines flight.
