Veteran Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee has backed party supremo Mamata Banerjee amid the ongoing rebellion within the TMC’s ranks, launching a sharp attack on a rebel faction of parliamentarians led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

Speaking to CNN-News18, Kalyan Banerjee made it clear that he would remain with Mamata despite the ongoing crisis, stressing that the party’s primary focus is to take on the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

He also signalled reconciliation with TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee after previously calling him “corrupt“, saying, “I have seen Abhishek grow up. He has said that I can tell him things, so it’s okay. Now we have to fight against the NDA."

TMC Crisis LIVE UPDATES

This came after Abhishek Banerjee responded to Kalyan Banerjee’s recent remarks, saying, “Kalyan Banerjee is older than me. He has the right to express his views. He has seen me from childhood. I won’t speak anything against him."

Kalyan Banerjee — a trusted aide of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and one of the key figures in the party — turned rebellious as he ripped into her nephew Abhishek, accusing him of destroying the party and humiliating him.

The TMC MP also gave Mamata Banerjee an ultimatum to either choose him or Abhishek Banerjee, bringing renewed attention to the relationship between different power centres within the party.
