Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy has revealed he would never remake or create a sequel to the iconic 'Sholay,' fearing comparisons to the original. He also discussed the film's censor issues during the Emergency, where scenes were cut due to their intense impact. The restored version will feature the original ending where Thakur avenges Gabbar.
The Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer 'Sholay' has completed five decades this year since its release in August 1975. The film, directed by Ramesh Sippy, has earned a legendary status over the years. In a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked if he would like to make a remake of the film or even a sequel to the same.

Ramesh Sippy on 'Sholay' sequel
In an interview with SCREEN, Ramesh Sippy was asked if he ever thought of making a sequel to the film. The filmmaker answered, "I would not touch it. People will always compare it with the original."Speaking about the new audience, the director shared that he would want the youngsters to feel the same way "about the movie as the previous generation did and enjoy the experience."
Ramesh Sippy opens up about the censor issues the film faced
In the same interview, Ramesh Sippy also opened up about the censor issues the movie faced.
The director shared, "At that time, India was under emergency." He stated that when he was talking to the Censor Board head, the latter said that movie was quite "violent." The filmmaker told the CBFC that they had not shown any blood and gore in the film and only captured the impact. Ramesh Sippy recalled, "He said the problem was exactly that: 'The impact was too much.
' So, we knocked off some action scenes."
Ramesh Sippy on the restored version
Ramesh Sippy shared that they have incorporated the original ending of Thakur killing Gabbar in the restored version of the film. Back in the day, the board had stated that Thakur was a cop, and he could not be shown as someone who would take the law into his own hands. Sippy recounted, "I even joked that he was not using his hands but feet. They also wanted us to remove the visuals of nails being hammered into his shoes. These will now be back in the film.
