Study suggests ancient Earth impacts may have sent microbes to Venus, with its temperate cloud layers seen as a possible habitat, but no evidence of life is confirmed

Could Earth Have Sent Life To Venus?
The Earth is the only planet to sustain life — a fact we have grown up listening to and studying in textbooks. But what if life is found, maybe someday, on Venus? There’s a high chance that it originally came from Earth through a process called ‘panspermia’.
According to a recent study presented at the 2026 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC), microbial life could have been “scooped up" from Earth’s upper atmosphere, finding its way to the more temperate cloud layers of Venus.
Studies suggest that between 700 and 750 million years ago, powerful planetary impacts may have blasted chunks of Earth’s surface into space, some of which eventually made their way to Venus.
Scientists are using this study to fathom how microbial life could travel and survive in the harsh, acidic clouds of Venus.
While the theory hints at a possible origin, there are no clear indications suggesting the possibility of life on Venus.
Why Venus’s Clouds
While the surface of Venus is an unforgiving inferno — hot enough to melt metals like lead — there’s a fascinating twist high above.
In the planet’s upper atmosphere, roughly 45 to 60 kilometers up, conditions become far less extreme. Temperatures there are relatively moderate, and pressures resemble those found at Earth’s surface.
The Venusian clouds are, therefore, considered a possible habitat for microbial life.
