Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised both the quality of the opposition and the passion of the Anfield crowd for inspiring his side’s exhilarating 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Alexis Mac Allister scored the match’s only goal in the second half, securing a well-earned victory as Slot’s team handed the LaLiga leaders their first defeat of the season in Europe’s premier competition.

“Impressive because we played against an incredible side, a team on an unbelievable run of form, having lost only once and won all their other games," Slot remarked.

“If you can win against them and perform like we did, that’s very positive."

“It’s been a tricky few weeks for us, with many away games and hardly any rest between matches. It helps to play in front of these fans and against Real Madrid because it brings out the best in my players and our supporters."

“A great performance. It could have been a bit more, maybe."

The Dutchman also commended his side’s defensive discipline, particularly in neutralising Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

“I mentioned before the game that they have scored 26 goals in LaLiga, with Mbappe and Vinicius together contributing 24 goals. So, to win this game, we had to ensure these two didn’t score," Slot noted.

Slot highlighted 22-year-old right back Conor Bradley for his standout performance.

“Conor was outstanding. To face Vinicius one-on-one so many times is not easy. He was exceptional today," Slot said.

The victory marked Liverpool’s second consecutive win, following their 2-0 Premier League triumph over Aston Villa on Saturday, which ended a dismal run of four straight league losses and six defeats in seven games across all competitions.

“We had a very bad run of form regarding results. No excuse can justify losing so many games," Slot acknowledged. “But we had to play numerous games in a short period. Tonight, we faced a team that also played on Saturday, so both of us had two days of rest.

“And it’s beneficial to play a home game because out of the last eight, six were away. The fans provide an extra edge when you’re a bit tired."
