Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met the family of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar a week after the senior police officer allegedly shot himself at his Haryana home. Gandhi met Kumar’s surviving kin in Chandigarh and urged Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action.

Rahul Gandhi appeared to back the claim that the senior officer faced caste bias from his department superiors. The officer in his suicide note wrote that he faced caste bias from superiors and named Haryana top cop Shatrujeet Kapur, who has been sent on leave, and Narendra Bijarniya, the then Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police, accusing them of harassment.

Y Puran Kumar died on October 7 after allegedly shooting himself. His wife Amneet, who is an IAS officer, sought an FIR against Kapur and Bijarniya, and to include the correct provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“This is not just a matter of one family. There are crores of Dalit brothers and sisters in the country, and they are getting the wrong message. The message that no matter how successful, intelligent, or capable you are, if you are a Dalit, you can be suppressed and thrown out. This is not acceptable for us," he said, according to reports by PTI.

“My message as LoP to PM Modi and the Haryana Chief Minister is fulfil commitment to daughters of IPS Puran Kumar, let his funeral take place," he said.

He also alleged that the Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini didn’t fulfill his commitment of a free and fair inquiry and claimed that Puran Kumar’s daughters are facing a lot of pressure.

The officer’s family, which is also seeking their arrest, has refused to give consent for a postmortem and cremation until its demands are addressed.

Various political leaders cutting across party lines have been visiting Kumar’s family in Chandigarh to express their condolences.

Gandhi was accompanied by former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Haryana Congress chief Rao Narender Singh, party leaders Kumari Selja, B K Hariprasad, Deepender Singh Hooda and Varun Chaudhry.
