IIT Patna climbs to 36th spot among higher education institutions

Patna: Making a major stride on the basis of its performance, the Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT-P) has climbed from its 73rd rank to 36th rank among higher education institutions in the country in the “overall” category, according to the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 report released on Thursday.

In the engineering category, it moved up from 34th to 19th rank this year. In the category of research institutions, it has been placed at 39th rank.In the overall category, the National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT-P) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna have been placed in the 101-150 rank band, while Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU), Pusa (Samastipur), figures in the 151-200 band.In the ‘universities’ category, RPCAU is in the 101-150 band, while the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) has been placed in the 151-200 band. In the ‘colleges’ category, Patna Women’s College, an autonomous institution under Patna University, has found a place in the 101-150 band.In engineering, NIT-P has secured 53rd rank this year. Apart from IIT-P and NIT-P, Amity University Patna has been placed in the 201-300 band.

AIIMS Patna, however, showed a slight decline in its academic standing as it dropped from 99th rank to the 101-150 band in the overall category and from 26th to 27th rank in ‘medicine’.In agricultural sciences, RPCAU made a remarkable jump from 29th to 14th rank this year, while Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, retained its 36th rank.The Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) in Patna secured 17th rank in the ‘law’ category, an improvement from its 31st rank last year.

CUSB at Gaya secured 23rd rank in ‘law’. Its pharmacy department has secured 63rd rank in the ‘pharmacy’ category.In the ‘management’ category, IIM Bodh Gaya showed a slight improvement, securing 31st rank compared to 33rd last year. Amity University Patna was placed in the 101-125 band. In the ‘architecture’ category, NIT-P secured 13th rank this year.Hailing the improved standing of IIT-P, registrar A K Thakur said the institution’s growth trajectory was clearly reflected in the rankings. “It has been possible only due to the sustained efforts of all stakeholders of the institute,” he said.CNLU vice-chancellor Faizan Mustafa, CUSB vice-chancellor K N Singh and RPCAU vice-chancellor P S Pandey also expressed satisfaction over the improvement in the NIRF rankings of their respective institutions this year.
