IMD issues severe thunderstorm warning for Delhi-NCR for next few hours; public urged to stay indoors

A severe thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds has been forecast for Delhi-NCR over the next few hours, prompting authorities to issue an alert warning of potential disruptions and urging residents to take immediate precautions.

In a post on X, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said: “Severe Thunderstorm and strong wind Alert – Impact & Public Advisory. Delhi NCR for next few hours.”According to the advisory, sudden gusts of wind could uproot trees, damage temporary structures, and disrupt power lines. Intense lightning activity is also expected, posing risks to life, especially for people in open areas. The IMD has cautioned that traffic disruptions are likely, and there could be delays in flight and train services due to adverse weather conditions.

Livestock and outdoor workers have also been identified as being at risk during this period of volatile weather.

The IMD has outlined several precautionary measures for public safety. Residents have been advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Electrical appliances should be unplugged to prevent damage from lightning surges, and people should avoid taking shelter under trees or metal structures during the storm. The use of mobile phones in open areas during lightning has also been discouraged. Farmers and outdoor labourers have been urged to suspend field work and seek immediate shelter.

Authorities also recommend keeping emergency kits and flashlights ready in case of power outages.
