Weather Today Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday issued an orange alert for 11 states, including Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, highlighting the possibility of light to moderate rainfall across these regions accompanied by thunderstorms.

The forecast predicted thundersqualls with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi. While it stated that dust storms were likely to hit West Rajasthan.

Other states that are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds today as well as tomorrow include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

Severe weather conditions continue to grip the Northeast as the rain-induced floods and landslides wreak havoc, claiming lives of at least 36.

With over 5.5 lakh people affected by the incessant rains across several states in the region, Assam reported the highest death toll of 11, followed by 10 fatalities in Arunachal Pradesh, six in Meghalaya, five in Mizoram, three in Sikkim and one in Tripura.

The situation continues to remain critical as IMD predicts continued rainfall in the region over the next seven days.

“Light or moderate rainfall at most places likely to continue over northeast India during next 7 days with isolated heavy to very heavy falls on 3rd June and isolated heavy falls during subsequent 24 hours,” the IMD warned.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Lakhimpur district which is among the worst-hit areas of the region and assured that possible assistance would be provided to those affected.

Schools in Aizawl to remain shut as monsoon grips the region

The schools in Aizawl were shut on the fourth consecutive daym on Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions that continue to grip the region.

The schools within the district were advised to suspend the attendance of students to ensure their safety and well-being.

Earlier, the schools were closed for three days, May 29, 30 and June 2, due to heavy rain.
