US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as one of America’s most vital global partnerships, calling the relationship central to the 21st-century world order as he introduced ambassador-designate Sergio Gor at his Senate confirmation hearing. Marco Rubio, addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, emphasised on the strategic importance of New Delhi.
“India is one of the top relationships the US has in the world today, in terms of the future, what the world is going to look like," he said, adding that Washington was in a period of “extraordinary transition" in its ties with India.
Sergio Gor’s Nomination
US President Donald Trump nominated Sergio Gor, 38, currently serving as Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House, to be the next US Ambassador to India. He has also been designated Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. If confirmed, Sergio Gor will be the youngest US ambassador to India.
Marco Rubio praised Sergio Gor’s longstanding relationship with Donald Trump, saying, “It is important that the United States be represented at that post with someone who has the direct ear and confidence of the President of the United States. I know of no one… who has had a better or closer working relationship than Gor."
Indo-Pacific Centrality
Marco Rubio placed India at the heart of America’s Indo-Pacific strategy, noting the renaming of the US Pacific Command to Indo-Pacific Command as a reflection of India’s significance.
“The story of the 21st century is going to be written in the Indo-Pacific… India is at the core of that," he said.
He also highlighted the complex challenges facing the relationship, from Russia’s war in Ukraine to shifting regional dynamics in Asia, stressing that strong US representation in New Delhi was critical to navigating them.
“We’ve got some really important issues coming up that we need to work with them on and work through that implicate what’s happening from Ukraine, but also implicate what’s happening in the region," he said.
