Incessant rain in Tripura has damaged various sections of the national highways hindering movement of people. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Friday (May 31, 2025) cautioned people that heavy rain would continue in all eight districts of the State.

It urged people to remain careful and cooperate with the emergency and rescue services to get shifted to safe locations.

Traffic and power supply have been disrupted across the State as trees got uprooted and fell on electric poles.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier requested Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to instruct his office to complete the repairs and construction work of the national highways at the earliest.

Rain has already caused waterlogging in different areas in Agartala city. Normal life and business have been adversely affected due to the extreme rough weather. Low-lying areas have been submerged

Relief camps opened

State officials said around 150 houses were damaged, with at least half of them completely. Relief camps have been opened in West Tripura, Khowai district and South Tripura with a few hundred people taking shelter in these camps.

A red alert for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for Unakoti and North Tripura districts, while a yellow alert (heavy rainfall) has been sounded in other districts.

Rivers being monitored

The State Emergency Operation Centre is continuously monitoring the water level of rivers in coordination with the Meteorological Department, the Central Water Commission and the PWD (Water Resources) Department, senior State government officials said.

The State government has instructed all District Magistrates to take the necessary steps for relief and rescue work. The Revenue Department is constantly in touch with the District Magistrates.
