India vice captain Rishabh Pant followed up his heroics in the first innings by scoring another century in the second innings on day 4 of the 1st test vs England on Monday. He also notched up another record when he became the player to hit the most sixes by a visiting batter in England with 8 sixes, 2 in the second innings and 6 in the first innings.
Pant, who crossed MS Dhoni as an Indian wicketkeeper with most Test tons with his 100 in the 1st innings, brought up his second innings century in 130 deliveries, peppered with 13 boundaries and 2 sixes. He was aptly supported by KL Rahul who brought up a century of his own as the Indian batters kept the pressure on England.
In this game, Pant had also become only the 3rd Indian wicketkeeper to complete 150 catches in Test matches.
After his first innings century, former India player Sanjay Manjrekar had branded Pant as India’s greatest ever Test batter-keeper.
“By far, India’s greatest ever Test batter-keeper. I was worried when he was in the 90s that he might end up getting his 8th 90 of his career. It is just unbelievable that he has so many 90s! But he’s a breath of fresh air. When he got out and raised his bat, there were a lot of English supporters who stood up and applauded that innings. That’s what we love about England — these guys come to watch good cricket. They obviously want their team to win, but when they see excellence from the opposition, you can see true appreciation for it,” Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.
In day 4 of the match, India had extended their lead over England to 159 runs as they reached lunch at 153-3
Resuming on 90-2, with a lead of 96, India captain Shubman Gill, who made his highest test score in the first innings, chopped onto his stumps to fall for eight, a second wicket for Brydon Carse.
